Challenger 601

The Challenger 601 brought turbofan re-engining to the original Challenger wide-body platform, and from Dallas it covers domestic heavy-jet routes with 3,500 nautical miles of range. It is the middle chapter of the Challenger story: more capable than the 600, quieter and more fuel-efficient, and priced below the later 604 and 605 variants.

Canadair re-engined the Challenger airframe with General Electric CF34-1A turbofans for the 601, which entered service in 1983. The CF34 brought a meaningful improvement in fuel consumption and cabin noise compared to the ALF502-powered 600. Seats 9 to 12 in the same 8-foot-2-inch wide fuselage. Range increased to 3,500 nautical miles. Full specifications for the Challenger 601 are published by Bombardier.

Why the Challenger 601 Fits Dallas

Dallas to New York is under 1,500 nautical miles, and Dallas to Toronto is roughly the same: the Challenger 601 handles both nonstop with margin. The 3,500-nautical-mile range also puts Dallas-Cancun and Dallas-Mexico City in reach, and at Addison’s 644-foot elevation with the CF34 turbofans, summer performance calculations are straightforward for the operator. The key corridor this airframe misses is Dallas-London, which at roughly 5,000 nautical miles requires a long-range or ultra-long-range aircraft.

The CF34 engine was a significant step forward for the Challenger family, and it is the same core powerplant used in the 604. On a Dallas-to-Chicago or Dallas-to-Washington DC leg, the differences between a 601 and a 604 are mostly in avionics and interior finish. The 601 fleet is older, so interior condition varies by operator, and that is worth asking about before booking.

A DFW energy-sector executive making repeat domestic trips, where cabin freshness matters less than getting to Houston, Midland, or New York reliably, often finds the 601 a practical option at this price point.

Vetting Behind Every Trip

Every operator, aircraft, and crew goes through our internal due diligence before we present any options. Our internal standards meet or exceed what the FAA requires:

  • FAR Part 135 charter operators for traditional private aircraft, or FAR Part 121 for airliner-size and group trips (or the foreign equivalent on international legs)
  • Operator subscription to Wyvern and ARGUS reviewed where the operator participates; reports may be provided on request.
  • Pilot experience and operator incident history reviewed before we recommend an aircraft.
  • Fewer than 60 brokers worldwide hold Premium Wyvern Broker Member status, and Air Charter Advisors is one of them.

Charter Pricing Reference

Industry hourly rates for the Challenger 601 run $7,000 to $9,000 per hour as of 8/2026. Actual quotes vary by operator, routing, positioning, and date.

At roughly $7,000 to $9,000 per hour, the Challenger 601 prices in line with the 600 and below the 604 and 605. The 700-nautical-mile range advantage over the 600 matters on routes pushing past 2,500 nautical miles.
